The R75/5 was a new departure for BMW. The company had made its reputation by building well engineered twin-cylinder flat twins that were the standard for motorcycle touring enthusiasts in the Fifties and Sixties. Like other established motorcycle companies, BMW wanted to catch the wave of motorcycle enthusiasm that lifted many manufacturers in.
